An interactive training tool that supports different learning styles by breaking down the menu into ingredients, dishes, and concepts. Features include flashcards, memory games, self-assessment options, and a timed menu test to strengthen recall and support high-quality service.

Benchmark

I reviewed the restaurant’s current training tools and popular flashcard platforms. The PDF menu and Better Chains app revealed usability, memorization, and support issues, while flashcard apps demonstrated interactive and structured recall methods. These findings guide a solution focused on organization and memory retention.

I interviewed restaurant staff to understand their training process, focusing on their goals, challenges, and needs. The interviews revealed difficulties in mastering menus, retaining information, and areas where improved tools could enhance learning and performance.

Core Insights

Menu Complexity & Retention-

Staff struggled to retain extensive menu details and unfamiliar terms, feeling overwhelmed without structured training or self-assessment tools.

Visual Learning-

Images of dishes with ingredient breakdowns improved memory retention and understanding of menu items, aiding accurate recall during shifts.

Real-World Experience-

Hands-on tasks, like serving customers and answering questions, were more effective than memorization for long-term retention.

Pressure & Feedback-

Shift pressure and training gaps caused mistakes and reliance on others. Personalized feedback and self-assessment tools boosted performance.

I created user personas based on the interview findings to represent the main pain points of my users.

Drawing from my restaurant experience, I saw how fast-paced environments challenge training quality, especially during crises like the pandemic. This app aims to streamline training with accessible tools that cater to different learning styles, reduce overload, and improve knowledge retention for better service.

In the future, I’d focus on enhancing the manager’s workflow, refining the evaluation process, and ensuring clear, effective feedback to support both apprentices and management further.
